We Have Never Faced Anything Like This

With the Coronavirus identified as reaching our shores last month, it has been difficult for many.

We can be in no doubt; most of us have never faced anything like this. People talk about the Second World War, but none of us can really remember what that was like, and I really think we will need some of that scale of ambition and response to rebuild our society and economy when this is over.

This is a very concerning time, both for people’s health but also for people’s financial well-being.

Nothing should be off the table when it comes to giving support and financial reassurance during what will undoubtedly be tough times ahead.

Plaid Cymru’s message on the economy is clear: we stand firm that no business should go under.

If the Westminster Government isn’t willing to make that promise, the Welsh Government should ask Boris Johnson’s Government for long term borrowing powers and access to treasury reserves.

Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price and I called on the Westminster Government to develop a Universal Basic Income plan to help manage the impact of the coronavirus crisis on people in Wales.

Paying a universal basic income to everyone at risk of losing employment would have the dual benefit of helping people and would provide economic stimulus at a period of grave uncertainty. It could be paid out quickly and simply in an initial three month period.

The announcement from the UK Chancellor last month provided some help and reassurances for businesses but not enough for individuals.

For example, people who are paying rent need the same level of protection as those who are paying a mortgage. There needs to be the same level of financial support available for everyone.

The Welsh Government must act too – I called for an immediate ban on rental evictions and for rent relief for renters. We need to see both the Westminster and Welsh Governments guarantee that no one will be left without a roof over their head during this crisis.
