In common with a number of other Welsh local authorities, Neath Port Talbot Council will be temporarily closing its cemeteries to members of the public (unless they are attending a funeral) to help stop the spread of Coronavirus.

Tending to graves or memorials at cemeteries is not considered essential, though Council staff will continue to manage the maintenance of cemeteries and their grounds.

Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Public Protection, Cllr Leanne Jones said: “Clearly, closing these sites is not something we’re doing lightly but we must try to ensure social distancing wherever possible.

“Stopping the spread of Covid-19 and keeping our communities safe has to be our priority.”

The Council operates nine cemeteries in the following areas:

The cemeteries will be locked from next Wednesday (8th April) but there will be access for the restricted family members allowed when funerals and burials are taking place during the current emergency.

The closures will remain in place until further notice.
