THE PEMBREY AND BURRY PORT COUNCIL’S RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 EMERGENCY

The Town Council pays tribute to the individuals and organisations in our community who have responded in a magnificent way by helping, supporting and communicating with those who need help and support.

Cllr. Mike Theodoulou Chair of the Regeneration and Community Engagement Committee said “ The response in our community has been awesome, not just from neighbour looking after neighbour, of which there has been plenty, but also local shops doing a lot to help, the Rugby club delivering food to those who are housebound – Emyr Evans and CETMA organising the Foodbank in Pembrey – The County Council supporting the Foodbank in Burry Port helped by the football club and the rugby club and co-ordinated by Cllr. Amanda Fox, all are doing a marvellous job for our community”

The Town Council’s contribution started by diverting some of our staff to pick up and deliver medicine from the local Chemist to those in need. Following discussions with the Foodbanks the Town Council will be doing much more.

Cllr. Bob John, Chair of the Facilities committee said “we will be offering Pembrey Memorial Hall to the local Foodbank as a temporary base to support the important work they are doing for our people”

The Town Council has established a list of essentials that are not covered by the Foodbanks and will be making those essential packages available to those who need them. Details are on the Council website but include Hygiene items, baby products and baby milk, washing powder and pet food. Importantly it will include assistance with electricity costs for those who are on a token system.

Cllr. David Owens, Chair of the Finance committee said “The Town Council has diverted funds from other budgets to meet the cost of our emergency support to our community and will keep the matter under review in case further support is needed.”

Additionally, the Town Council will be doing two things to bring a little cheer to our younger community members. Firstly, any child with a birthday during the lockdown period will receive a birthday gift from us. Just contact us with details.

Secondly on Wednesday and Thursday this week the Easter Bunny will be walking some of the main streets in Pembrey and Burry Port and any child that waves to it from the window will get Easter eggs on the door step. Details on our Facebook page.

Cllr. Mike Theodoulou, who also is Chairman of the Council’s Chairs committee concluded by saying, “I hope that this demonstrates how all the Town Councillors are committed to helping our community and that they are all determined to do as much as they can for those in the in the greatest need and all this has been done by your Councillors while they have isolated and continue to work for the community using technology from home.
