Volunteers and community groups in Neath Port Talbot who are dedicating their time to helping others in response to the coronavirus outbreak have been thanked by Neath Port Talbot Council in an open letter.

More than 500 volunteers have registered to support the county borough’s most vulnerable residents during the outbreak as part of the council’s NPT Safe and Well Service. The service has been set up to support residents who have been told to shield themselves from the coronavirus but have no friends, family or neighbours to call on for support.

Volunteers have been supporting residents with daily living tasks such as picking up prescriptions, posting mail, dog walking and making regular phone calls to make sure people are okay.

The service has also linked up with existing support networks that have been set up by community groups, town and community councils, housing associations and councillors across the county borough.

In the letter, Councillor Rob Jones, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, said:

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your involvement in supporting our most vulnerable residents during the coronavirus outbreak.

“The response to our appeal for volunteers has been overwhelming during what is an extremely difficult time.

“Whilst a lot of people are lucky enough to have family, friends and neighbours nearby who can help them, that’s not the case for everyone.

“Alongside the work of council staff, councillors, housing associations and community organisations, all of our volunteers have played a significant role in supporting the local community. Whether this has been through delivering food parcels, collecting medical prescriptions or checking to see if someone is okay; this support has been critical to those who need it.

“The communities of Neath Port Talbot are really stepping up to the challenge, and we are confident that by working together, we can ensure everyone has someone to turn to for help.

“On behalf of the council and the people of Neath Port Talbot, I thank you all and wish you the very best as you continue to protect our most vulnerable residents at this time.”
