‘NO NUCLEAR MUD’ CAMPAIGN UP AND RUNNING

The No Nuclear Mud Campaign was launched after Wales’ first online public meeting took place over two evenings this week. The campaign meeting had been called by the Welsh National Party. The campaigners were prompted by news that EDF is in discussions with the Welsh Government through Natural Resources Wales to dump 780,000 tonnes of sediment from the Hinkley Point nuclear power station just a mile from Wales’ capital city.

Campaigners, who were vocal opponents of the dredging in 2018 when the Welsh government first approved plans to dump up to 300,000 tonnes of mud from the nuclear site, met over two evenings, after the first meeting was zoom bombed by racist trolls.

Professor Keith Barnham of Imperial College London gave for slides of evidence, highlighting his conclusion that the mud contained plutonium. Richard Bramhall, secretary of the Low Level Radiation Campaign and a former UK Government advisor on the Committee Examining Radiation Risks of Internal Emitters, stated that micro-particles of plutonium had been detected near to Hinkley Point and outlined the dramatic and deadly effect such particles have on the human body.

Chair of Pwllheli Marina and now Chair of the No Nuclear Mud Campaign said,

“ I was shocked listening to the evidence provided by the scientists who gave presentations. Professor Keith Barnham was clear about the plutonium production at Hinkley, the radioactive leaks and how he is convinced that plutonium is in the mud.

With the tide in the Severn and the Gullf stream, the mud will be washed north to Llyn, We must stop the dumping, it’s as simple as that. “

Leader of the Welsh National Party Neil McEvoy said,

“The presentations were very sobering. The evidence of plutonium production at Hinkley and leaks into the estuary is incontrovertible. When a senior research fellow at Imperial College London like Professor Barnham says that he is convinced that plutonium is in the mud, then we really must listen.

The public needs to know that scientists are openly saying that the mud has not been tested properly. Plutonium is an alpha emitter, but no tests have carried out for such alpha micro-particles. This is a staggering oversight.

The campaign is now back up and running, with supporters in all corners of Wales. We must stop the dumping.”
