Dear Editor,
Child sexual abuse is going unreported in Wales during lockdown as the already invisible nature of this type of abuse is exacerbated by children not having as much contact with sources of support.
Along with members of the Cross-Party Group on Preventing Child Sexual Abuse and Action Group on Child Sexual Abuse I am very concerned about the impact the current lockdown is having on children who are being sexually abused. Specialist sexual abuse services are still taking referrals, offering support remotely, helplines are open and the Sexual Assault Referral Centres are taking referrals, but there have been less referrals at a time when children are less visible to professionals.
Not all children are safe at home and some will be at risk of child sexual abuse from a member of their own household – 90% of children are abused by someone they know. For others, increased online activity will heighten the risk of being targeted online.
I want to reassure parents that the police can always be contacted if a child is at immediate risk. Any adult concerned about the welfare of a child or young person can call the NSPCC helpline for free and confidential advice and support on 0808 800 5000 or via help@nspcc.org.uk. Anyone concerned about their behaviour can call Stop It Now! Wales on 0808 1000 900.
