Nestle decide KitKats are no longer to be Fairtrade
Nestlé after 10 years of sourcing Fairtrade cocoa and sugar for its KitKats will end its Fairtrade commitment and instead promote their own Cocoa Plan.
As a result of this cocoa farmers in Côte d’Ivoire, and sugar farmers in Fiji and Malawi will lose £1.95m (almost £2m) in Fairtrade premium every year – a small amount for a multi-billion-pound global business, but a real lifeline for some of the world’s poorest farmers, most of whom live below the poverty line.
Cocoa farmers earn on average just 74 pence per day. This will mean less money in the hands of farmers to choose how they invest in the communities, farms and cooperatives.

Nestle’n rhoi’r gorau i ddefnyddio cynnyrch Masnach Deg mewn Kit Kats
Bydd Nestlé, ar ôl 10 mlynedd o brynu coco a siwgr Masnach Deg ar gyfer ei KitKats, yn diweddu ei ymrwymiad Masnach Deg gan hyrwyddo’i Gynllun Coco ei hun yn lle.
O ganlyniad i hyn, bydd ffermwyr coco yn y Traeth Ifori, a ffermwyr siwgr yn Ffiji a Malawi yn colli £1.95m (oddeutu £2m) mewn premiymau Masnach Deg bob blwyddyn – swm bach i fusnes byd-eang gwerth biliynau o bunnoedd, ond llinell fywyd gwirioneddol i rai o’r ffermwyr tlotaf yn y byd, y mae’r rhan fwyaf ohonynt yn byw’n is na’r ffin tlodi.
Ar gyfartaledd, mae ffermwyr coco’n ennill 74c y dydd. Bydd hyn yn golygu llai o arian yn nwylo’r ffermwyr i ddewis sut byddant yn buddsoddi yn y cymunedau, y ffermydd a’r cydweithfeydd.
