Comforting Canines: The 10 Best Dog Breeds for Beating Anxiety

We already know how much fun and affection a pet can bring into their owners lives, but did you know that pets have some powerful physical and mental health benefits too? 

Dogs can help to reduce stress, anxiety as well as encourage social contact and physical activity – but most importantly – dogs bring unconditional love and happiness into our lives without even knowing it.  

The new Dog Difference Report by online dog food brand tails.com reveals that dog owners in the UK are much better equipped to deal with the stresses and strains of post-lockdown life based on the amount of support their four-legged therapists have provided, with 71% saying their dog cheered them up when times were tough. 

Almost four in five men (79%) say that they confide in their dog on a regular basis, but are more likely to chat to their dog when they are alone (13.2%) vs women (11%). 

Two-thirds (66%) would call their dog a ‘four-legged’ therapist and two in five (40%) admit confiding in their dog before telling their partner or best friend.

The survey also found that some breeds are better therapy dogs than others, with Lurchers topping the list.

Top 10 Four-Legged Dog Therapists:

1. Lurchers – 83%

Lurchers are the perfect companion. At times quite lazy, super affectionate and loving nothing more than getting up close for a cuddle. But with a manic energy burst every now and again to put a smile on your face with their comical antics.

2. Bichon Frise – 79%

A happy, playful little breed that is very intelligent and can be a little stubborn to train, but more than makes up for this with their loving, affectionate nature. In fact, they are guaranteed to put a smile on your face with their independent streak. 

3. Yorkshire Terrier – 78%

A sharp cookie, Yorkies will amuse their owner as they figure your game out everytime. They love affection and can even be a bit clingy, but retain the terrier streak of mischief anyone who has had one will attest to. 

4. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel – 77% 

A total sweetheart, making a wonderful addition to the family home, particularly with young children. Loves to play and plod into the heart of the action, but equally content snuggling up on your lap. Not the sharpest tool in the box, but that’s part of their appeal. 

5. Labradoodle – 75%  

Combining the lust for life (and food!) of a Labrador, but the refined tastes and intelligence of a Poodle, this is an entertaining mixed breed perfect for an active family. Equal parts goofball and adventure dog, a Labradoodle will get you up and active to enjoy life to the max.  

6. Miniature Dachshund – 74%

The mini ‘sausage dog’ is not for everyone, despite their recent boom in popularity. Fiercely loyal, which can translate as ‘not great with strange dogs or people’ Dachshunds are strong willed and if they don’t like something they’ll let you know. With good socialisation you can overcome their feisty nature, but whatever their attitude to strangers they sure love their owners hard. 

7. Staffordshire Bull Terrier – 71%

‘Staffies’ are weirdly wired, hilariously vocal, boundlessly energetic and just love people more than life itself. Super entertaining, they live life to the max and aren’t known as ‘the nanny dog’ for no reason. Great with kids and an all round crowd pleaser. 

8. English Springer Spaniel – 70%

A whirlwind of energy, you can’t fail to be amused by a bouncy Springer. Energy level? The clue’s in the name. Expect to be pinging out that door for exercise several times a day, it’s hard to tire out a Springer. But all that exercise, fresh air and joie de vivre is guaranteed to buoy your mood and keep you smiling. 

9. German Shepherd – 70%

One of the most loyal breeds, you’ll find a true friend in a German Shepherd. Activity level high, so be prepared for multiple daily exercise excursions.  

10. Labrador Retriever 67%

Labradors are a gentle, playful, patient and comical all-rounder. Biddable and intelligent, they’ll learn tricks and keep you entertained but many Lab owners will also acknowledge their dumb streak. A fun addition to the family with a crazy appetite and a sense of humour.
