We have all been spending a lot more time at home recently, and for many people it has been a challenging time. Busy families often struggle to make space work for them, and home improvements can be put off for months if not years. Without moving home or spending a lot of money, it can feel impossible to create more space from thin air, but it is possible. From simple changes to DIY projects and conversions, there are lots of ways to increase living space in any size of home. Here are some ideas to help you maximise the living space in your home.

Underbed storage

You could replace a large bed with a smaller one, but most people are not keen on that idea. Instead, to free up space in your bedroom, invest in some underbed storage drawers or a bed with a mattress that can be lifted to reveal storage space.

Make the most of your dead space

If your home is lacking in storage, consider making use of lost spaces like landings, corridors, space under the stairs and wall cavities with bespoke cabinets and wardrobes. You could also add shelves which are set back into alcoves, so they do not stick out into the room.

Convert your attic

If your attic is up there not doing much, it might be time to consider converting it into and extra bedroom or living space. It is likely to be a costly project, but when you come to sell the property it is likely to add to the sale price.

Build a log cabin in the garden

If used well, your garden can be a wonderful living space, especially if you invest in a log cabin or similar structure. Log cabins can have multiple rooms, multiple purposes and can be designed to suit gardens of all shapes and sizes. Some people use long lasting garden cabins as offices, guest accommodation, gyms, a space for games, parties and entertainment, or a studio for a hobby or small business. You need to consider insulation, energy supply (and consumption) and the materials used in the construction of the cabin to ensure it is fit for purpose and will withstand the elements.

Repurpose the guest room

Rather than having a guest room set up for occasional visits from guests, consider putting the room to better use and adding a sofa bed to the lounge instead. There are plenty of comfortable and stylish sofa beds on the market to choose from.

Consider installing sliding doors

Replacing standard doors with sliding doors can be a great way to maximise space in a small home. You might even be able to add storage or furniture without open doors taking up the space.

Declutter

It is possible that your home feels small or cramped because you have too many possessions. Take some time to sort through your belongings, furniture and clothes to see if you can dispose of some of them. You might be surprised just how much more spacious your home feels when you are finished.
