Making changes to help you support local

We’re making some changes to help our town centres get back on their feet, helping our businesses – and you – to stay safe and thrive.

So when you pop into town over the coming weeks, you will notice changes being made.

Some of our town centre streets are being pedestrianised to support traders to bring their business outdoors, and to allow safe queuing and social distancing.

One-way systems for walkways are being brought in to place in some areas, and additional space created for pedestrians by changing some parking bays.

Lower speed limits will also be introduced on many streets to ensure pedestrian safety. It is hoped the measures will not only create a safer place for people to shop local, support traders and enjoy coming into our town centres, but have a positive impact on our environment too – providing more space and improving air quality.

Town centre streets that are being improved for the safety will be pedestrianised between 10am and 4pm, but will be accessible outside these core hours.

Cllr Emlyn Dole, Leader of the Council, said: “We hope these new measures will help our local businesses to get back on their feet and thrive as we all adapt to a new way of shopping and meeting with friends to enjoy our leisure time.

“These changes have been implemented after much consideration and within the boundaries of what the council can do safely and responsibly to protect businesses and visitors whilst also keeping our town centres flowing and operating well.

“We really hope that people will come back to our town centres and help them thrive again by shopping and spending their leisure time locally. We’re urging people to buy local and support Carmarthenshire businesses.”

Ammanford

From Monday, August 3, a number of changes are being made to Ammanford town centre to help with social distancing.

What are the changes?

Changes include the widening of footpaths around the bus station and advisory signs asking you to ‘keep left’. A small section at the top of Wind Street where it joins with Quay Street, will be pedestrianised and we’re working with contractors to remove some hoarding.

Along Carregaman Lane we’re widening the footway by cutting back vegetation and adding new facilities for cyclists, and an alternative pedestrian link is being made connecting Wind Street with the bottom end of Lloyd Street.

A number of new 20mph zones are also being introduced. Please refer to the map for full details of all the new temporary measures.

A number of one-way pedestrian routes are also being implemented to help social distancing, including along Jacksons Lane, the alleys connecting Spilman Street with King Street, and around the bus depot on Blue Street.

In Blue Street, ‘pedestrian step-off’ areas have been created to allow people to pass each other safely. New on-street parking, including disabled parking bays, will be made available along the highway on Lammas Street.

A number of new 20mph zones are also being introduced. Please refer to the map for full details of all the new temporary measures.

Llanelli

From Monday, August 3, we will be pedestrianising Cowell Street from its junction with John Street and in the area in front of Spring Gardens, which means no access for vehicles from 10am to 4pm daily.

What are the changes?

As this will affect the disabled parking bays in this area, new temporary disabled parking bays will be made available along the highway as you enter Cowell Street from Murray Street, and along John Street, although the existing limited waiting bays will be removed.

A number of new 20mph zones are also being introduced. Please refer to the map for full details of all the new temporary measures.
