Five tasty recipes to celebrate National Fish & Chips Day with…

Crispy Fish & Chips With Lemony Mayo

According to the National Federation of Fish Fryers, over a quarter of all fish and chips eaten in the UK are sold on Fridays, but if you’re looking for a home-cooked alternative, what about rustling up the nation’s favourite dish at home?

With this brilliant take on the classic, you’ll make your own deliciously crisp breaded fish served with homemade chips, sugar snap peas and a zingy lemony mayo.

Jordan’s Top Tip: When breading your fish fillet, keep one hand for the dry ingredients (the panko breadcrumbs) and the other for the wet ingredients (the egg), that way, the ingredients won’t mix together and form a sticky paste around your fingers.

Fish & Chip Wraps, Mushy Peas & Tartare Sauce

For a fish and chip butty with a twist, you’ll wrap crispy haddock bites, crisp oven-baked fries and mushy peas in warm tortillas. Drizzle with lashings of homemade tartar sauce, and dig in! This kid-friendly fish and chips recipe will delight even the fussiest of little folk at the dinner table.

Jordan’s Top Tip: For the crispiest oven-baked chips, place your uncooked chips into an ice bath and leave for 15-20 minutes before frying. This will remove any starch and prevent your chips from going soggy!

Creamy Fish & Chip Pie With Peas

If you love good old fashioned fish and chips, then you’ll love this modern twist. Hearty homemade pie meets the traditional British takeaway for an ultra-satisfying family Friday night dinner. Once your pie starts bubbling and the chips on top are crispy and brown, serve with a side of peas.

Jordan’s Top Tip: If you’re using fresh fish (as opposed to frozen), coat your fillet in flour before dipping into the mixed batter. This will remove excess moisture from the fish, helping you achieve an even coating all over with no gaps!

Homemade Fish Fingers, Chunky Chips & Mangetout

Crispy on the outside and juicy from the inside, this homemade fish finger recipe is a breeze to make. If you have kids to please or don’t fancy the traditional fish and chips, why not try this miniature version?

You’ll coat basa fillets and fry till battered and crisped to perfection, and complete with minted mangetout and chunky chips – the perfect Friday fakeaway meal!

Jordan’s Top Tip: If you don’t have a thermometer to hand, you can dip the handle of a wooden spoon into the oil to check the temperature. If the oil starts bubbling around the wooden handle then you’re at the perfect temperature to fry.

A healthier cod & chips with all the flavours of the nation’s favourite, only a little lighter. You’ll oven-bake the chips, pan-fry the cod and make your own mushy (sugar snap) peas. Served with a simple lemon mayo & fried capers for essential crispiness! (Gluten-free, suitable for coeliacs).

Jordan’s Top Tip: The secret to good chips is to dip them twice. Fry your chips for 2-3 minutes, remove them from the oil, allow to drain on kitchen paper and cool to room temperature and fry again. By double-cooking the chips, it makes them extra-crispy.
