NUCLEAR MUD PETITION SOARS PAST 10K AS CONTROVERSIAL TOPIC UP FOR DEBATE IN THE WELSH PARLIAMENT

780,000 tonnes of sediment from nuclear plant set to be dumped just one mile from Wales’ capital city.

The row over dredging mud from Hinkley Point nuclear power station into Welsh waters is back into the spotlight as campaigners reach 10,000 signatures for a petition calling for the mud to be tested last night.

As the petition is over 5,000 signatures, it means the controversial topic will be up for a debate in the Welsh Parliament.

The petition, created by Cian Ciaran of the Super Furry Animals, demands ‘that a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is carried out before any further sediment from Hinkley Point nuclear power station can be dumped’.

Welsh National Party leader, Neil McEvoy MS, who has been a prominent voice in the campaign welcomed the news,

“The Labour Government cannot ignore this issue anymore”.

“How can we allow 780,000 tonnes of material dredged from outside a nuclear power station to be dumped in our waters without testing it properly? The Labour-led Government and Natural Resources Wales have a lot to answer for.

“The public is concerned about this issue. Environmentalists are outraged. Eminent scientists are on record saying they are seriously concerned. The only people who don’t seem to be bothered about this are the Labour politicians sitting in Cardiff Bay. Wales is standing up for itself

“This is first and foremost about the safety of our people and of our marine environment. It is also about how Wales is treated as a nation. The Chinese long ago brought in a ban on ‘foreign garbage’ to stop other countries dumping their rubbish there. In Wales, our government seems to welcome such treatment. But the Welsh people have had enough.”

The row began in 2018, once it was revealed the Labour-led Government had approved plans for the dumping of 300,000 tonnes of sediment from outside the Hinkley Point nuclear station.

EDF Energy is set to deposit another 780,000 tonnes of sludge off the Welsh coast next year as part of building work for the new £22bn Hinkley Point C reactor.

Disgwylir i 780,000 tunnell o waddod o orsaf niwclear gael ei ollwng yn y môr gwta filltir o brif ddinas Cymru.

Mae’r ffrae dros garthu mwd o orsaf ynni niwclear Hinkley Point a’i ryddhau yn nyfroedd Cymru yn ôl dan y chwyddwydr wrth i ymgyrchwyr lwyddo i gasglu 10,000 o lofnodion ar gyfer deiseb sy’n galw am brofi’r mwd.

Gan fod y ddeiseb wedi casglu dros 5,000 o lofnodion, mae’n golygu nawr y bydd y pwnc dadleuol yn destun dadl yn Senedd Cymru.

Mae’r ddeiseb, a grëwyd gan Cian Ciaran o’r Super Furry Animals, yn mynnu ‘bod Asesiad Effaith Amgylcheddol (EIA) llawn yn cael ei gynnal cyn y gellir dympio unrhyw waddod pellach o orsaf ynni niwclear Hinkley Point’.

Croesawyd y newyddion gan arweinydd y Blaid Genedlaethol Neil McEvoy AS, sydd wedi bod yn llais amlwg yn yr ymgyrch,

“Ni all y Llywodraeth Lafur anwybyddu’r mater hwn bellach”.

“Sut allwn ni ganiatáu i 780,000 tunnell o ddeunydd a garthwyd o’r tu allan i orsaf ynni niwclear gael ei ollwng yn ein dyfroedd heb ei brofi’n iawn? Mae gan y Llywodraeth dan arweiniad Llafur a Chyfoeth Naturiol Cymru lawer iawn i’w ateb.

“Mae’r cyhoedd yn poeni am y mater hwn. Mae amgylcheddwyr yn gandryll. Mae gwyddonwyr amlwg yn dweud eu bod yn poeni o ddifrif am hyn. Yr unig bobl nad ydynt yn poeni dim oll am hyn yw gwleidyddion y blaid Lafur sy’n eistedd ym Mae Caerdydd.

“Mae hyn yn anad dim yn ymwneud â diogelwch ein pobl a’n hamgylchedd morol. Mae hefyd yn ymwneud â sut mae Cymru yn cael ei thrin fel cenedl. Cyflwynodd Tseina waharddiad amser maith yn ôl ar ‘sbwriel tramor’ i atal gwledydd eraill rhag cael gwared ar eu sbwriel yno. Yng Nghymru, mae’n ymddangos bod ein llywodraeth yn croesawu triniaeth o’r fath. Ond mae pobl Cymru wedi cael digon.”

Dechreuodd y ffrae yn 2018, unwaith y datgelwyd bod y Llywodraeth dan arweiniad Llafur wedi cymeradwyo cynlluniau ar gyfer dympio 300,000 tunnell o waddod o’r tu allan i orsaf niwclear Hinkley Point.

Disgwylir i EDF Energy adneuo 780,000 tunnell pellach o waddod oddi ar arfordir Cymru y flwyddyn nesaf, fel rhan o waith adeiladu ar gyfer yr adweithydd Hinkley Point C newydd, sydd werth £22bn.
