Contractors move on site for £11.5 school build

Morgan Sindall has been appointed to build the school on land fronting Heol Gwyosydd in Penlan next to Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe.

The project is being jointly funded by Swansea Council and the Welsh Government under the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme.

YGG Tirdeunaw is currently based next to the former Daniel James secondary school site at Heol Ddu where it provides 420 full-time places and 60 nursery places, but the buildings are no longer suitable for the growing school.

The new build, which is less than a mile from the current site and is also more central to the majority of current pupils attending, will provide places for 525 full-time pupils and 75 nursery places along with a Flying Start/Dechrau Deg’ initiative.

Cllr Jennifer Raynor, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education Improvement, Learning and Skills, said: “I’m pleased that we have now reached the point that the main contractor can start work on this exciting investment.

“Earlier this month pupils and staff at Gorseinon Primary moved into a brand new home and it was quite clear how being in new fit-for-purpose accommodation can capture the imagination of the children and excite their teachers.

“Swansea Council is committed to improving school buildings so that we can give all our young people the very best surroundings in which to achieve their full potential.”

During the summer residents will have seen work being undertaken to a section of Heol Gwyrosydd.

Once complete this will include improved lighting, speed calming, a new pedestrian crossing and the creation of a parent vehicle drop off/pick up layby.

The project also includes a purpose-built coach park that will serve both YGG Tirdeunaw and YGG Bryn Tawe as well as a dedicated car park for staff and modifications to the site which will provide a new multi -use games area.

During Band B of the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme Swansea Council and the Welsh Government are investing almost £150m in improving school buildings and facilities in Swansea.

Work is currently taking place at Bishopston Comprehensive School and at YG Gwyr and new builds are progressing well for the Pupil Referral Unit and YGG Tan-y-lan.

All contractors are committed to using local workers and suppliers and creating apprenticeship and work experience opportunities.

Cllr Raynor added: “Never before has education in Swansea seen investment on such a scale and Swansea Council is looking forward to announcing further projects in the near future.”
