The next generation is set to learn all about the census and how it benefits their local area as part of two new, engaging educational programmes launching this term.
With just 6 months until the next census, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has developed a series of census-related lessons and activities for both primary and secondary schools across England and Wales. Now it is calling on schools to sign up.
The primary school campaign, Let’s Count!, is a cross-curricular programme developed in conjunction with Family and Education and their education resource centre, iChild. The education programme is designed to excite children and families alike about the census.
Let’s Count! has achieved accreditation from Mathematics in Education and Industry, National Association for the Teaching of English, and the Geographical Association. With maths and statistics at its core, the programme provides flexible lesson plans and engaging activities for pupils to learn how they can use statistics across many topics.
British historian, Professor David Olusoga OBE, is also on board and he will be delivering a special live stream lesson on equality and representation.
Professor Olusoga said: “I am thrilled to be part of this campaign. I passionately believe in public history and above all in making the stories of everyone and every community in the UK accessible to children. 2020 has been a year in which young people have shown us that equality and representation, the issues my lesson will explore, are issues that acutely matter to them. The census – as ever – will provide a snapshot of who we are as a nation. History explains how we got here.” |
Meanwhile, a secondary school campaign has been developed by EVERFI EdComs. The programme was co-created with teachers and students to develop engaging content to help raise awareness of the census with a pre-launch film profiling the diverse voices of the census being released today. Students will explore why the census matters to them and their local communities, covering topics across the curriculum.
Iain Bell, deputy national statistician at the ONS, said: “These programmes offer a great opportunity for children to learn about the importance of the census. They help children learn more about maths and their own local area, and they will also raise awareness of the census, which informs many important issues like the number of school place or hospital beds. By running programmes in primary and secondary schools across England and Wales, we want to engage pupils of all ages in the census and by doing so make Census 2021 a huge success.”
The Let’s Count! primary school campaign was piloted during the 2019 Census rehearsal, with many schools taking part within the rehearsal areas. A selection of schools also took part in the Let’s Count! competition, creating school-centred census displays, with Jubilee Primary School in Hackney being crowned the winners.
George Gould, Head of Year 6 at Jubilee Primary school, said: “This competition was a great way of developing all of our children’s statistics and citizenship skills, speaking and listening to members of the local community and collecting and presenting data.”
Phil Bird, CEO of Family & Education/iChild said: “We are delighted to be part of this unique event, and excited to develop and share time-saving Census 2021 education resources with our iChild network. The Let’s Count! programme will help improve maths, geography and writing skills, using Census 2021, a significant real-life event, as a stimulus. It has accreditation and exclusive content from MEI, NATE and the Geographical Association.”
The Secondary School Education Programme will aim to engage young people, empowering them to use their voices to encourage their families and community to complete the census. The programme will use real-world tasks to explore how data is used and influences decisions across society. The lesson content will inspire whole-school participation and link to curriculum subjects such as citizenship, PSHE, maths and history.
Darren Sayer, Secondary Deputy Headteacher at Hanson Academy, Bradford, said: “The census is a very worthwhile topic and the resources provided by this programme form a very valuable insight into why data and information are so important and how they can affect change.”
Nick Fuller, President of EVERFI EdComs said: “It’s great to be part of this historic campaign and we at EVERFI EdComs want to ensure young people and their families understand what Census 2021 means for them and the communities they live in.”
It is hoped the school campaigns will help raise awareness of the digital-first census, happening on 21 March 2021. The census occurs once every ten years and provides a snapshot of households in England and Wales, helping to plan and fund public services.

Lansio rhaglenni i ysgolion cynradd ac uwchradd er mwyn ennyn diddordeb disgyblion yng Nghyfrifiad 2021
Bydd cyfle i’r genhedlaeth nesaf ddysgu am y cyfrifiad a sut mae’n fuddiol i’w hardal leol fel rhan o ddwy raglen addysgol ddiddorol newydd sy’n lansio y tymor hwn.
Dim ond 6 mis sydd tan y cyfrifiad nesaf, ac mae’r Swyddfa Ystadegau Gwladol (SYG) wedi datblygu cyfres o wersi a gweithgareddau sy’n gysylltiedig â’r cyfrifiad ar gyfer ysgolion cynradd ac uwchradd ledled Cymru a Lloegr. Nawr mae’n galw ar ysgolion i gofrestru.
Mae’r ymgyrch i ysgolion cynradd, Gadewch i ni Gyfrif!, yn rhaglen drawsgwricwlaidd a gafodd ei datblygu ar y cyd ag asiantaeth Family and Education a’i chanolfan adnoddau addysg, iChild. Nod y rhaglen addysg yw gwneud plant a theuluoedd fel ei gilydd yn gyffrous am y cyfrifiad. Mae rhaglen Gadewch i ni Gyfrif! wedi cael ei hachredu gan Mathematics in Education and Industry, y Gymdeithas Genedlaethol ar gyfer Addysgu Saesneg a’r Gymdeithas Ddaearyddol.
Mathemateg ac ystadegau sydd wrth wraidd y rhaglen, ac mae’n darparu cynlluniau gwersi hyblyg a gweithgareddau sy’n ennyn diddordeb disgyblion er mwyn iddynt ddysgu sut y gallant ddefnyddio ystadegau mewn llawer o bynciau.
Mae’r hanesydd Prydeinig, yr Athro David Olusoga OBE, hefyd yn cefnogi’r ymgyrch a bydd yn cynnal gwers arbennig ar gydraddoldeb a chynrychiolaeth a gaiff ei ffrydio’n fyw.
Dywedodd yr Athro Olusoga: “Rwy’n falch iawn o fod yn rhan o’r ymgyrch hon. Rwy’n credu’n frwd mewn hanes cyhoeddus ac, yn anad dim, sicrhau bod hanesion pawb a phob cymuned yn y DU ar gael i blant. Mae 2020 wedi bod yn flwyddyn lle mae pobl ifanc wedi dangos i ni bod cydraddoldeb a chynrychiolaeth – sef y materion y bydd fy ngwers yn eu hystyried – yn faterion sydd o bwys mawr iddynt. Fel erioed, bydd y cyfrifiad yn rhoi ciplun o bwy ydym ni fel cenedl. Mae hanes yn esbonio sut y daethom i’r fan hon.” |
Yn y cyfamser, mae ymgyrch i ysgolion uwchradd wedi cael ei datblygu gan EVERFI EdComs. Cafodd y rhaglen ei chreu ar y cyd ag athrawon a myfyrwyr i ddatblygu cynnwys diddorol er mwyn helpu i godi ymwybyddiaeth o’r cyfrifiad, gyda ffilm yn portreadu lleisiau amrywiol y cyfrifiad yn cael ei rhyddhau ar 23 Medi, cyn i’r rhaglen ei hun gael ei lansio. Bydd myfyrwyr yn ystyried pam mae’r cyfrifiad yn bwysig iddyn nhw a’u cymunedau lleol, gan drafod pynciau ar draws y cwricwlwm.
Dywedodd Iain Bell, y dirprwy ystadegydd gwladol: “Bydd y rhaglenni hyn yn cynnig cyfle gwych i blant ddysgu am bwysigrwydd y cyfrifiad. Byddant yn helpu plant i ddysgu mwy am fathemateg a’u hardal leol eu hunain, ac yn codi ymwybyddiaeth o’r cyfrifiad, sy’n llywio penderfyniadau ar lawer o faterion pwysig fel nifer y lleoedd mewn ysgolion neu nifer y gwelyau mewn ysbytai. Drwy gynnal rhaglenni mewn ysgolion cynradd ac uwchradd ledled Cymru a Lloegr, rydym am ennyn diddordeb disgyblion o bob oed yn y cyfrifiad, gan wneud Cyfrifiad 2021 yn llwyddiant ysbugol drwy wneud hynny.”
Cafodd ymgyrch Gadewch i ni Gyfrif! ar gyfer ysgolion cynradd ei threialu yn ystod ymarfer y cyfrifiad yn 2019, gyda llawer o ysgolion yn cymryd rhan yn ardaloedd yr ymarfer. Cymerodd detholiad o ysgolion ran yng nghystadleuaeth Gadewch i ni Gyfrif! hefyd, gan greu arddangosfeydd ar y cyfrifiad yn seiliedig ar eu hysgol, ac Ysgol Gynradd Jubilee yn Hackney oedd yr ysgol fuddugol.
Dywedodd George Gould, Pennaeth Blwyddyn 6 yn Ysgol Gynradd Jubilee: “Roedd y gystadleuaeth hon yn ffordd wych o ddatblygu holl sgiliau ystadegau a dinasyddiaeth ein plant, drwy siarad ag aelodau o’r gymuned leol a gwrando arnyn nhw, a chasglu a chyflwyno data.”
Dywedodd Phil Bird, Prif Swyddog Gweithredol Family & Education/iChild: “Rydym ni wrth ein bodd o gael bod yn rhan o’r digwyddiad unigryw hwn, ac yn edrych ymlaen at ddatblygu a rhannu adnoddau addysg hwylus Cyfrifiad 2021 â rhwydwaith iChild. Bydd rhaglen Gadewch i ni Gyfrif! yn helpu i wella sgiliau mathemateg, daearyddiaeth ac ysgrifennu, gan ddefnyddio Cyfrifiad 2021, sef digwyddiad pwysig mewn bywyd go iawn, fel sbardun. Mae’r rhaglen wedi cael ei hachredu gan MEI, NATE a’r Gymdeithas Ddaearyddol.”
Nod y rhaglen ar gyfer ysgolion uwchradd fydd ennyn diddordeb pobl ifanc, gan eu grymuso i ddefnyddio eu lleisiau i annog eu teuluoedd a’u cymuned i gwblhau’r cyfrifiad. Bydd y rhaglen yn defnyddio tasgau yn y byd go iawn i ystyried sut mae data yn cael eu defnyddio ac yn dylanwadu ar benderfyniadau ym mhob rhan o gymdeithas. Bydd y cynnwys ar gyfer gwersi yn ysbrydoli’r ysgol gyfan i gymryd rhan ac yn cysylltu â phynciau’r cwricwlwm fel dinasyddiaeth, ABGI, mathemateg a hanes.
Dywedodd Darren Sayer, Dirprwy Bennaeth Uwchradd yn Academi Hanson, Bradford: “Mae’r cyfrifiad yn bwnc gwerth chweil ac mae’r adnoddau a gaiff eu darparu gan y rhaglen hon yn rhoi cipolwg gwerthfawr iawn i ganfod pam mae data a gwybodaeth mor bwysig a sut y gallant arwain at newid.”
Dywedodd Nick Fuller, Llywydd EVERFI EdComs: “Mae’n wych bod yn rhan o’r ymgyrch hanesyddol hon ac rydym ni yn EVERFI EdComs am sicrhau bod pobl ifanc a’u teuluoedd yn deall beth mae Cyfrifiad 2021 yn ei olygu iddyn nhw a’r cymunedau y maent yn byw ynddynt.”
Y gobaith yw y bydd yr ymgyrchoedd i ysgolion yn helpu i godi ymwybyddiaeth o’r cyfrifiad digidol yn gyntaf, a fydd yn digwydd ar 21 Mawrth 2021. Caiff y cyfrifiad ei gynnal unwaith bob deng mlynedd ac mae’n cynnig ciplun o gartrefi yng Nghymru a Lloegr sy’n helpu i gynllunio ac ariannu gwasanaethau cyhoeddus.
