Janet Finch-Saunders MS – the Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs – is backing a virtual Harvest Festival that begins tomorrow (October 3) at midday.

The virtual Harvest Festival is a follow-up from the successful Greatest Online Agricultural Show, which was held in May. The show was conceived to honour and keep alive the spirit of all the agricultural shows cancelled over the summer because of the pandemic and lockdown.

A spokesperson for the organisers said:

“We have decided to do a harvest festival for the same reason: to celebrate British food and farming, and the event is entirely online and is to raise money for rural welfare charities.”

Mrs Finch-Saunders said:

“This is such a great idea. Many of us will have memories of taking some food to school or church when we were children or as adults with children of our own, and because lockdowns are affecting much of Wales and the UK, and churches here not open for full services, we can’t show our appreciation for the farming community in the usual way.

“So yes, I wholeheartedly back this idea to show our appreciation for the farmers, shepherds, dairymen, fishermen, and gamekeepers and all those in the supply chain including the drivers, butchers, and bakers who do so much to keep us fed during normal times, but who have excelled themselves this year.”
