A new order has been introduced into parts of Llanelli Town Centre to help combat alcohol related crime and anti-social behaviour.
The Public Spaces Protection Order will give police additional powers if people are caught drinking alcohol and causing a nuisance in Tyshia, Glanymor and Elli ward areas.
Carmarthenshire County Council approved the order which will also allow police to confiscate the alcohol in the designated zones.
It will be in place for three years.
People could be arrested and fined up to £500 if they fail to comply with a request from police to stop drinking or hand over their alcohol.
The order does not apply to licensed premises and clubs where the sale of alcohol is authorised.
Chief Inspector Chris Neve of Dyfed Powys Police said “The order, granted by our partners in the local authority, is a valuable tool in tackling anti-social behaviour and other problems caused by public use of alcohol in the Llanelli area. The use of PSPOs is a much quicker and more effective way for us as a police service to deal with alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour and will significantly support us in making the community of Llanelli a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.”
Signs will be placed in the zones reminding people reminding people it is an offence to drink alcohol in the streets.
A map showing the areas covered by the order is available on the council’s website.
The council’s executive board member for community safety, Cllr Cefin Campbell said: “The aim of this order is to ensure that people quite rightly can enjoy public spaces free from anti-social behaviour. Alcohol related anti-social behaviour and crime can have a detrimental effect on the quality of life for those in the local community. We are committed to tackling anti-social behaviour in our communities and this order will allow us to work with the police to address these issues.”
