Laura Doel, Director of NAHT Cymru, said:

“NAHT Cymru has been calling for a whole-scale review of how schools are funded and how much it costs to educate a child in Wales.

“Unfortunately, this report is little more than a spending audit and tells us largely what we already knew: that there is not enough money in the system.

“The report does highlight the 6% real-terms fall in education spending per learner over the last decade, as well as acknowledging the higher costs facing schools, not least because of covid.

“The Welsh Government has made education a top priority, but it can’t just say that and then let things slide. Funding must continue to keep pace with the new costs and challenges facing schools.

“Curriculum reform and the new ALN framework will only further exacerbate an already pressurised funding system and until we get to the heart of this issue and overhaul the system, progress will always be stifled by a lack of money.”
