The Shadow Health Minister – Andrew RT Davies MS – has said it “… beggars belief” to be discussing Christmas and New Year lockdowns before the effectiveness of the second national lockdown in Wales has even begun.
Mr Davies was referring to statement by the Minister for Transport today (October 20) in which he said that Labour cannot rule out imposing another national lockdown early in 2021, if Covid starts spreading over the festive period.
Mr Davies said:
“It beggars belief that the Welsh Labour-led Government is talking about a third national lockdown – and let’s use the right words; it’s not a ‘firebreak’, but a full lockdown – in Wales before the one due to come in on Friday evening has begun.
“It’s not right and I once again reiterate our call for targeted lockdowns, a reinstatement of shielding, and ensuring testing and financial resources are directed at the hot-spot areas in Wales.
He added that it is likely to be a hard time for many people this Christmas, adding:
“Rather than give people a Miserable Christmas and an Unhappy New Year, let’s give a little hope. Let’s see the evidence and the data that these decisions are based on. Let’s see how effective this second lockdown is. Let’s see how the Minister’s party will balance health and the economy during this lockdown.”
The second national lockdown in Wales begins at 6pm on Friday.
