Andrew RT Davies MS – the Shadow Health Minister – has welcomed the Welsh Labour-led Government’s comment that it will look at introducing hyperlocal lockdowns, and will also consider mass Covid testing in towns in Wales.

Commenting on the statements, made during the Welsh Government’s news conference today, Mr Davies said:

“It would be easy to crow about this and say that the Welsh Conservatives have scored a victory – we’ve been calling for hyperlocal lockdowns for months now – but it would be a bit of a hollow victory bearing in mind the devastating effect it’s had on people and businesses. And let’s remember that today isn’t the end of a 17-day lockdown, but for some, the end of eight weeks in lockdown.

“With today’s positive news regarding a potential vaccine, I welcome the First Minister’s acknowledgement that he is also considering the kind of mass testing carried out city or town-wide as is happening in Liverpool.

“Nobody wants further to see further lockdowns, but if they are to be imposed again, then they have to be targeted and based on ultra-accurate and localised data, which city-wide testing could provide.”
