Commenting on the report that at least 49,000 patients in Wales had been waiting for more than a year for NHS treatment in September, Welsh Conservative health spokesperson, Andrew RT Davies MS said:

“Regrettably, waiting list targets were being missed before the pandemic started with the Welsh Labour-led Government consistently letting down patients.

“Coronavirus has led to NHS waiting lists growing longer but the pandemic has only put a spotlight on how bad things were before, and all we get from Labour’s health minister is excuses.

“It’s not good enough and Wales deserves better.

“Behind every statistic is an individual in pain and instead of claiming it would be ‘foolish’ to have a plan to tackle the backlog, Vaughan Gething needs to end his defeatism and get on top of this situation urgently.

“Our plan would mean ramping up capacity in Covid-free hospitals so we can get back on top of treatments, and patients aren’t left waiting in unnecessary agony or anxiety.”
