The UK Government has announced they will extend the additional £20 per week payments in Universal Credit to those most in need from April 2021.

The extra money worth over £1,000 per year to the poorest households was announced earlier this year as a temporary measure in response to COVID which was only due to last until 5 April 2021.

Welcoming the news Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds said:

“This will be welcome relief to thousands of families across Wales who are still struggling with the financial impact of COIVD. I hope, once the pandemic is over, the government can look again at these payments and will decide that this increase should be kept to lift many families out of poverty.

“Longer term the UK government needs to fix universal credit which continues to cause misery and hardship to so many in our society.”
