Gambling on the rise during lockdown among most vulnerable groups says Wales TUC

• almost seven in ten (68%) of existing gamblers have increased either the number of money or time spent on at least one gambling activity
• YouGov survey reveals gamblers aged 18-34 reported an increase in gambling.
• Wales TUC launches Problem Gambling toolkit during Safer Gambling Week (19 – 25 November)

According to Wales TUC, the coronavirus pandemic has been “extremely damaging” to those affected by problem gambling.

Debt, broken relationships, poor mental health and even suicide have been linked to the growth of problem gambling in Wales.

Wales TUC General Secretary Shavanah Taj said:

“Problem gambling can grip your life tightly. Your mobile phone is now a casino in your pocket, with online gambling at your fingertips 24/7.

Gambling harms go beyond the individual, and affect friends, loved ones and colleagues.

Unions can play a key role in supporting members during their mental health journey, signposting them to appropriate support, and creating a supportive and sympathetic workplace culture.

This is why the Wales TUC has developed a reps toolkit, to support members facing problem gambling, and to signpost them to support.”

The Wales TUC toolkit will be launched on Thursday, 19 November, with an online event during Safer Gambling Week (19-25).

Speakers at the event include Carolyn Harris – Member of Parliament (Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Gambling Harm), Mick Antoniw – Member of the Welsh Parliament (Chair of parliament’s Cross Party Group on Problem Gambling), and ARA who offers counselling and support to problem gamblers and other people affected by it.
