The Welsh Nation Party Group of Councillors in Cardiff has put forward a policy motion to Cardiff Council to re-open Castle Street to all traffic, whilst retaining the cycle lane.
Neil McEvoy MS said,
” The closure means hundreds of millions of extra car miles being driven over a year. The cost to the environment of this ill-thought out plan is truly staggering. More car miles, more air pollution, more carbon; all for the sake of cleaning up one street.
Businesses are suffering and want the road re-opened. The Covid crisis is bad enough, but the continued road closure is making things even worse. I hardly meet anyone who thinks the closure is a good idea. I urge all Labour councillors to listen to the 1,000 residents who signed our petition.”
WNP Councillor Keith Parry said,
” The closure does not take into account the difficulties elderly and disabled people have getting around. The closure is discriminatory. When the traffic gets back to normal after Covid, parts of Cardiff will be gridlocked. The Council must re-open Castle Street. That is certainly what the Welsh Nation Party wants.”
The motion to be voted on today reads:
Proposer: Councillor McEvoy
Seconder: Councillor Keith Parry
1. This Council regrets the ill-advised closure of Castle Street.
2. We note the disruption caused by closure.
3. We furthermore express concern about the extra car miles now being driven and the negative effect on the environment.
4. The Council resolves to re-open Castle Street as soon as can be done in practical terms in January 2021, whilst preserving safe cycling lanes.
