During FMQs today (December 8), Paul Davies MS – the Leader of the Opposition in the Welsh Parliament – was pleased to hear that the First Minister acknowledged the Welsh Conservative call for Wales to embrace a four-nation approach to tackling the pandemic.
Speaking later, Mr Davies said:
“On the day that the Pfizer vaccine has been given to the first people in Wales, it was gratifying, if a little delayed, to hear the First Minister welcome the approach we have long argued for: a four-nation approach to tackling the virus.
“However, it was back to his old evasive ways with some of the other questions I put to him, notably asking him to confirm what measures to cope with the virus, as hinted at yesterday and today by the Health Minister, could be put in place.
“His response that he ‘… doesn’t think that we will be taking other measures before Christmas’, but hinting that they could be introduced afterwards doesn’t offer any clarity or reassurance on what should be a day of hope.”
Mr Davies was also critical of the First Minister’s allegation that Welsh Conservatives had not supported the Labour Government’s policies to deal with the Covid outbreak, and added:
“The Welsh Conservative side of the Chamber has supported the majority of Labour’s Coronavirus regulations tabled since March, so it’s not true that we have not – on the whole – supported the measures taken.”
