GMB Union worked with Health Minister Vaughan Gething and the Welsh Government to bring about today’s landmark change
GMB has welcomed today’s announcement restrictions on blood donation for gay and bisexual men are being relaxed across Wales – and the rest of the UK.
GMB’s Blood Equality Wales campaign, led by GMB members Arron Bevan-John and Alex Bryant-Evans, has been the driving force in this change – with Health Minister Vaughan Gething name-checking the group on twitter this morning [December 14th]. [1]
The move means men who have sex with men in a long-term relationship will now be able to donate blood at any time. [2]
The changes will be implemented by summer 2021.
Arron Bevan-John, co-chair of GMB’s Blood Equality Wales campaign said:
“We’d like to thank Vaughan Gething and the Welsh Government for working constructively with us at Blood Equality Wales to bring about today’s landmark change.
“This campaign has involved thousands of people and different groups over the years and we’re proud to have done our bit.
“The best part of today is that nobody loses, it was just a restriction that had to go.
“This is truly a momentous day and one in which Wales, along with the rest of the UK, takes another step in the direction of true social equality.
