Census 2021 is just around the corner and you can be part of history by making up part of its 30,000-strong team.

The Office for National Statistics is hiring thousands of field staff across Wales to encourage people to take part.

The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of the population and households. Census day is March 21.

The census field operation will be rolled out in late March and into April, following up with households who have not completed their census form. Field officers will never enter a house.

All contacts with the public will be socially distanced and field staff will be equipped with PPE in line with government guidance. It will operate much like postmen and supermarket delivery drivers have worked during the pandemic.

“The decennial census is a little over two months away and the ONS is hiring thousands of people in a range of exciting temporary roles to make it a success,” Pete Benton, census director of operations, said.

“There will be more than 30,000 field staff at the height of the census operation this spring and I would love the census field force to include people from every corner of England and Wales.

“If you like being out in the community and talking to people, this is the role for you. They are Covid safe, with staff equipped with PPE in line with government guidance. Every post filled will help ensure communities across the Wales are represented – this is your chance to be part of history.”

Understanding the needs of the nation helps everyone from central government to organisations such as councils and health authorities, plan and fund public services.

Information from the census is also important in helping lots of other people and organisations do their work. Charities and voluntary organisations often use it as evidence to get funding. It also helps businesses to understand their customers and decide where to open new services.

It is therefore crucial everyone – from people living in commuter-belts to all inner-city communities; from those living in the countryside to student populations; all generations and ethnic minorities – take part to give the best picture of the nation.

Census officers will offer help and advice to those who need it. They will also remind people that their census response is required by law. Flexible hours are available, although some evening and weekend work will be expected.

These roles are especially suited, but not limited, to those experienced in this type of work, students or people looking for temporary employment.
