Maria Jones, a Caerleon foster mum for Action for Children is walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats for the charity during 2021, without leaving her locale.

Maria is virtually walking the 1,083 miles on her treadmill and out locally to boost her physical, emotional and mental health through the pandemic as well as raising money for Action for Children.  She is using the Conquerer Events service that tracks her progress and will plant 5 trees on her behalf.

Maria said: ‘I started the challenge on the 4th January I’m aiming to walk 3 miles per day to complete the challenge within the year.  I’m hoping to be able to start running again and complete more miles each day so I can finish the challenge sooner than the end of the year.

‘As a fostering family for Action for Children we see first-hand the difference it makes when a child is safe, loved and championed on to be all they were created to be.  This is why I decided to challenge myself to walk/run from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for this amazing charity!  If anyone would like to donate, I would be grateful and delighted.’

Maria works for the Pobl Group, looking after the wellbeing of 2,700 staff there and is no stranger to charity challenges.  She completed a sponsored ‘Brave the Shave’ with her daughter in 2016 and raised £3,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support.

Nina Rice, Area Fundraising Manager for Action for Children in Wales, said; ‘As a valued foster parent for Action for Children, we are delighted Maria has taken on this mighty challenge for us.  Keeping body and soul together is crucial during these extremely difficult times so we’re very grateful she is combining physical exercise with raising money for children and families who need it most in our communities.  Well done Maria!’
