Angela Burns MS – the Shadow Health Minister – has expressed her concern over how Post-Covid-19 syndrome – commonly known as “long Covid” – is affecting people in Wales. Commenting after Health, Social Care, and Sport Committee meeting today (March 10), which included evidence from the Long Covid Wales group, Mrs Burns said:
“We’ve all heard pretty upsetting reports and statistics over Covid since the pandemic was declared, but some of the evidence raised today went beyond that. We heard reports from people suffering with long Covid who are lobbying for recognition for the illness, and are campaigning for multi-disciplinary specialist clinics in Wales.
“I agree with these calls for specialist long-Covid clinics, similar to those that have been introduced across England, to be rolled out here in Wales.
“Such ‘one-stop shop’ clinics would allow clinicians to develop the expertise needed to treat this new illness, which again according to evidence from Long Covid Wales, includes a significant number of NHS staff. And while anyone experiencing long Covid must be listened to and have their symptoms investigated, there is a particular need for NHS staff to receive treatment.
“This is not because they have done so much for so many during the pandemic, but because they need to recover so they can carry on doing their fantastic work to help Wales and the NHS recover.”
