Extending the validity of theory tests not the right course of action, says learner-driver insurance CEO

Gunnar Peters, CEO at learner driver insurance specialist Veygo said: “It’s been a difficult year for learner drivers, and it will inevitably take time before we see things return to normal in the industry with such a significant backlog of people hoping to take both their theory and practical tests.

“Extending the validity of theory tests beyond two years wouldn’t be the right course of action, as up-to-date knowledge is vital for learner drivers and the safety of all road users is, and always should be, paramount. However, this will be understandably frustrating for many learner drivers who will find themselves out of pocket if forced to retake expired theory tests through no fault of their own, so we’d like to see the DVSA waiving fees for those affected.

“Learner drivers will also want to get back behind the wheel to brush up on their practical skills, but we’re likely to see a shortage of lessons as demand will be so high. Paired with the current backlog of 420,000 tests and an estimated waiting time of 17 weeks, drivers could consider practicing with friends and family in their household or bubble to gain valuable road experience. We’ve seen an increase in private learning during the pandemic, and we’d encourage people looking to get more private practice in to shop around for the best cover to suit their individual situation.”
