Carmarthenshire County Council is once again supporting World Earth Week.
Banners designed by school children are being displayed at County Hall in Carmarthen and Llanelli Town Hall in recognition of the importance of the climate change crisis and reducing environmental footprint.
To mark World Earth Day on Thursday, the council is holding its first ever Children’s Climate Conference involving 40 pupils from 14 primary schools. The virtual event in partnership with Carmarthen Town Council, Dolen Cymru Lesotho, Wales Centre for International Affairs, Size of Wales, and Keep Wales Tidy, will feature a quiz, a chance to share experiences and pick-up new ideas.
Each school has already carried out research into the impact of climate change on a given country and has prepared a special news bulletin to share on the day.
All the schools participating in the conference are Eco Schools with many of the pupils participating are leading members of the school’s echo committee.
Carmarthenshire is one of the authorities with the highest number of Platinum and Green Flag schools in Wales and has been involved in the programme for 27 years. Many of the pupils participating are leading members of the school’s Eco Committee.
The council is committed to reducing its environmental footprint. In February 2019, we declared a climate emergency, and made a commitment to becoming a net zero carbon local authority by 2030.
