Two charities in South Wales have received a donation of £10,000 from the Amazon fulfilment centre team in Swansea to help them continue to support the local community during COVID-19.

The donation was made after two members of the Amazon team nominated The Wallich and F.A.N Community Alliance to benefit from a special COVID-19 support initiative as part of Amazon’s programme to support the communities around its operating locations in the UK. The charities received £5,000 each.

The Wallich, Wales’s leading homelessness and rough sleeping charity, provides support and accommodation for people who are at risk of, or are currently experiencing, homelessness. The Wallich plans to use the donation to build a new patio area at one of its Swansea projects, allowing residents to safely socialise.

F.A.N Community Alliance aims to prevent loneliness, foster support networks and provide a community safety net for when people need help. The donation will go towards the development of existing food projects and activity packs for children.

Speaking on the donation, Omer Kartal, Site Leader at Amazon in Swansea, said:

“We’re proud to support organisations that are making a real difference in our community like The Wallich and F.A.N Community Alliance. The staff and volunteers of both charities have been a great support to the people in South Wales during COVID-19 and we want to lend a helping hand with this donation.”

Alan Smith, who nominated The Wallich to receive the donation, said:

“The Wallich is a charity close to my heart and I am pleased that it has been chosen to receive this donation from Amazon. I hope that it gives the staff and volunteers a boost during what continues to be a challenging year.”

Kevin Tucker, a Senior Support Worker at The Wallich, said:

“Like all charities, our services have never been needed more than they are now. Amazon’s support is hugely appreciated and will enable us to continue to reach and help people in our community, particularly through our new outdoor area. Thank you to Omer and the team in Swansea for this donation.”

Community donations are one of a number of ways in which Amazon is supporting communities across the UK during COVID-19.

Throughout the pandemic, Amazon has teamed up with charity partner Magic Breakfast to help deliver more than three and a half million healthy breakfasts to disadvantaged children around the UK. The company has also provided students with free online STEM resources and supported virtual classrooms with no-cost resources.

Amazon established an on-site COVID-19 testing programme for front-line workers to help keep employees and customers safe during the pandemic. For more information on how Amazon is supporting th
