Purchasing pigs and a journey into pig rearing will be on the menu as Menter Moch Cymru jump on the online platform for this year’s virtual Royal Welsh Smallholding and Countryside Festival that will be held on the weekend

Rain or shine the public will be able to tune in for this year’s remote festival from the comfort of their own home and Menter Moch Cymru, working in collaboration with Farming Connect have arranged two high profile webinars.

The first webinar will be held on Saturday 15th of May at 2pm and will give you an insight into pig breeders Cennydd and Naiomi’s journey who farm in Ceredigion.  They both took part in the Menter Moch Cymru and YFC finishing competition in 2017.

Today they run a small breeding herd of Welsh pigs selling all the progeny through their branded “Traed Moch” boxed meat scheme.

Join Cennydd and Naiomi to learn how they developed from new pig keepers to building a successful meat box business.

In our second webinar held on Sunday, May the 16th at 2pm join renowned pig vet and specialist, Bob Stevenson who will be looking at the topic of what factors to look out for when purchasing pigs, what to avoid and isolation and integration protocols.

During the webinar Bob will discuss the medicines pigs should receive before entering the farm, and what appearance signs and symptoms we should look out for when choosing the ideal pigs for the holding.

Melanie Cargill Menter Moch Cymru Project manager said that she was pleased that Menter Moch Cymru were able to reach out and target their audience with online events and it was a unique way of keeping in touch with pig farmers as well as farmers that were thinking of the prospect of pig keeping.

“It’s great that the festival is being held virtually once again this year.  We are able to reach out with online events and share information and keep in touch with the farmers.  We are also very lucky that pig experts and breeders are ready to share their experiences and speciality.”

Keep an eye on the RWAS, Menter Moch Cymru and Farming Connect’s social media platforms over the weekend to access these webinars.

Menter Moch Cymru is funded by the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.
