Gifts our dad will probably not like (and what to get him instead)

Even though dads can be patient and appreciative of the gesture, some gifts are considered a universal poor choice for a reason. Ties, socks, toilet humour and anything to do with the lawnmower is probably a bad choice for a Father’s Day gift this year. Father’s Day is an annual celebration on the third Sunday of June.

Get your dad the perfect gift this year, and refrain from resorting to the stereotypical boring gifts. This is a chance to thank your dad for everything he has done for you and to give him a wonderful gift. Here are some items your dad will probably not like and what you can get him instead.

Ties

A tie is, arguably, of the most boring gifts you can get your dad. Even if your dad wears a tie every day, he probably has a whole stack of them that he never wears in the back of his closet. Instead of adding to the pile of unworn ties, opt for something fun and valuable like a FitBit or noise-cancelling headphones.

Socks

No one gets excited at the prospect of socks. Instead of buying him silly socks, get him some running trainers or smart shoes. If he’s just taken up a new hobby, you could buy him some new gear – like boxing gloves, a fishing rod or a phone armband. Try to tailor the gift to your dad’s hobbies and interests so he will benefit from the item.

Cosmetics

Cosmetics are always a risky item when it comes to dads. Save your money and step away from the nose trimmer, flavoured Chapstick and starter aftershave set. Buy his favourite whiskey or a voucher for your local restaurant instead. Sometimes the best gift is something you can do together, like go out for dinner or spend a day at your local amusement park.

You could go for an original personalised gift, like a mug with a picture of your family on it, to make him feel extra special.

Lawnmower

Avoid anything related to chores, housework and the garden. Consider doing a project for him instead of buying him tools to do more tasks around the house. You could paint a fence that he’s been meaning to do, or deep clean and organise the spare room. No one likes doing chores, and your dad would probably appreciate the extra helping hand over a physical gift.
