Everyone is talking about Schitt’s Creek, the Netflix sitcom that sees a family of newly broke millionaires forced to live in their one remaining asset – a backwater town they bought as a joke.
And one thing’s for sure, it’s got some people thinking, where will I go if the schitt hits the fan?
Well, believe it or not, buying your own town is actually a thing. Who wouldn’t want to move into their own little settlement, have the ultimate private retreat, and take on the title of mayor overnight?
From western-inspired ranches and quaint rural villages to desert-side towns, there’s a surprisingly wide range of options available. What’s more, purchasing your very own town is perhaps a smart move in property investment, you can pay as little as £680K for a slice of Arizona, through to an eye watering £6.1 million for sprawling 59-acre Swedish estate.
With this in mind, the personal finance experts at money.co.uk have compiled a guide revealing the most and least expensive towns that are currently on the market, so, if you find yourself up schitt creek – without a paddle in sight – maybe you too could have somewhere to fall back on and rest your head.
Salman Haqqi, personal finance expert at money.co.uk, said: “You never know what life may throw at you next, so it’s good to be prepared and have options that work for you and your family.
“Regardless of whether you are looking to buy your own small town, or simply move to a new house in a rural location in the UK, you need to carefully consider your finances and make sure you are investing your funds in the best way possible.
“That’s where our mortgage comparison tool comes in – it helps you work out what you can afford based on the best deal for your personal circumstances.”
Pearce, Arizona, USA Price: £680,000
A snip at a mere £680,000, Pearce was once home to one of the richest gold mines in all of Arizona. It was founded in 1895 and attracted adventurers seeking their fortunes. When the bounty dried up though, Pearce was left abandoned. Featuring original store façades, a working blacksmith shop (thank goodness …) and airy living quarters – it’s yours for the taking.
Aberllefenni, Wales Price: £1.5 million
This entire Welsh village with its wooded forest and a stunning mountain range is on the market for a cool £1.5 million. It’s the perfect investment for outdoor enthusiasts, thanks to its idyllic walking routes, canoeing opportunities, and the peaceful foothills of the Cader Idris mountains. While some of the desolate buildings are in need of work, this only gives the new owners a chance to put their own stamp on them. Fancy a challenging renovation project?
Sätra Brunn, Västmanland County, Sweden Price £6.1 million
It boasts a hefty price tag, but this extensive settlement encompasses around 59 sprawling acres and is home to 70 buildings, from picturesque residences to a hotel, preschool, restaurant, church and gym. According to the listing, the annual turnover of the village was between $3.4 million (£2.5 million) and $3.9 million (£2.8 million) in 2019. Not to mention, Sätra Brunn has also been bottling its natural spring water since 2015, so the lucky buyer could end up with a very lucrative (and hydrating) side hustle.
Now, who’s moving to Arizona?
