Brentford celebrated their Championship Playoff final victory with an emphatic win at Wembley Stadium in front of a sun soaked crowd of 11,684 and sealed their place in next season’s Premier League.
Swans kicked off the game and with only 8 or so minutes played into the first half, the Swans conceded a soft penalty kick. The spot kick was converted by Brentford’s top marksman Ivan Toney who angled his spot kick into the bottom corner of the Swans net leaving Swans keeper Woodman helpless in his attempted dive to stop it.
Worse was to follow very shortly when Brentford broke away from a Swansea attack leaving the Swans defence back peddling as fast as they could to stop the impending threat. But it was all too late as the ball was crossed low right across the Swans penalty area where the ball was steered into the Swans net leaving the Swans keeper Woodman making a belated attempt to stop the goal.
The score line could have been even worse for the Swans as Brentford’s Toney shot clipped the top of the Swans cross bar. Brentford 2-0 up and at half time and in full control as the Swans could not find a way to unlock Brentford’s tight defensive unit.
The Swans were first out in the second half and had it all to do if they wanted to get back into this contest and give the Jack Army some hope. Unfortunately the pattern of the first half was repeated and Brentford were totally dominant forcing Swansea in to a series of miss timed tackles.
The Brentford goalkeeper had a very quiet afternoon and he wasn’t really tested throughout the game. Not even the Swans substitutes could make a huge difference to the outcome.
Tragedy struck the Swans when Swansea midfielder Jay Fulton seemed to slip on the Wembley playing surface and slid into a two footed tackle on his opponent and earned himself a straight red card. So Swans down to ten men and up against it.
90 minutes up and 6 minutes stoppage time could not delay the inevitable outcome of this game. Joyous Brentford celebrations at the final whistle and some fond farewells from the Swans players to their travelling support.
Emilano Marcondes named as man of the match and scored the second goal for Brentford.
