The Mentrau Iaith and Football Association Wales are calling on all Welsh football fans to vote for their favourite new chant to support Wales at EURO2020. As part of the Gwlad y Chants competition, supporters can choose their favourite out of 9 Welsh and bilingual chants on Mentrau Iaith Cymru’s social media between June 2nd – 4th , 2021.
The shortlist for three categories were chosen by a judging panel, including sports reporter, Sioned Dafydd, ‘Y Wal Goch’ footy show presenter, Yws Gwynedd, lead singer of Y Cledrau, Joseff Owen and football fanatic, Gwenno Teifi.
Joseff Owen says;
“Chants are such an important part of a fan’s experience watching a match and a part of that culture. It’s so much fun to be a part of the crowd singing together. I think we‘ve missed them even more than ever this past year with fans not able to watch matches in person.”
Sioned Dafydd says;
“To me a good football chant needs to be funny, simple and something you can learn quite quickly. I always enjoy a bit of humour in a footy chant!”
Winners of each category will receive a shirt signed by Wales’ EURO2020 squad while compsers of the overall winning chant will have the chance to visit a Wales training session in the future.
Gwlad y Chants competition is a collaborative campaign for Mentrau Iaith and FAW to encourage supporters to use a little bit more Welsh while cheering on the national football team.
Gwenno Teifi says;
“We’ve come so far from where we were when I first started going to see Cymru, just hearing ‘WALES, WALES’. I’m excited to hear some new, Welsh language chants in the mix.“
Dafydd Vaughan, Menter Iaith Sir Benfro Youth Officer, says;
“We can’t wait to hear the winning chants sung out by fans to support Cymru at EURO2020. With Wales playing two friendly matches this week, there’s no better time to try out these ‘chants before voting for your favourite!”
