THE UK’S GREENEST REGION REVEALED: RENEWABLE ENERGY PRODUCTION ACROSS THE UK

  • There are 871,608 renewable energy site sources across the UK
  • The South West holds the most renewable energy sites at 123,802, meaning there are 53.3 renewable energy sites for every 1,000 households in the South West
  • For every 1,000 households in London, there are 8.2 renewable energy sites
  • Solar energy is the most popular renewable energy source across the UK with the top location for solar energy production being Cornwall with 18,076 solar power sites
  • Northern Ireland is the worst UK region for renewable energy production with 1,264 renewable energy sites

May 2021: Heating specialists Stelrad analysed data from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy on Renewable Electricity By Local Authority to determine which region of the UK produces the most green energy. You can view the full campaign here.

Across the UK we have a long-standing appreciation and drive for production and innovation. From the industrial revolution through to the digital age, British developments have helped drive the nation forward, but the modern world faces a new challenge: climate change.

The effects of climate change are drastic, with a predicted 7.5 degrees rise in climate temperature over the next century which will devastate Earth’s ecosystem. We all need innovation and action now to curve this prediction.

With the UK government pushing a new plan for a ‘Green Industrial Revolution’ and pleading to power all homes renewable by 2030, the nation is asking if the UK is green enough to reach this goal? Recent analyses into energy production in the UK has revealed the number of renewable energy sites across the UK, crowning the South West the UK’s greenest region. Should we pat ourselves on the back for our green energy successes, or does the UK as a whole have much more to offer in terms of renewable production?

Mapped: The UK’s Regional Renewable Energy Sites

Across the UK there are 871,608 renewable energy sites producing green energy for our nation, with the most popular renewable source being solar energy. There are an estimated 1.5 million UK homes fitted with solar panels, making it the largest green energy source for our nation, and perhaps the most readily available across the country as all UK regions reported high levels of solar energy production.

Regional Renewable Energy Results

However, as the nation pushes towards a greener way of living, renewably sourced energy for our homes is crucial. The data unveiled each UK region’s capabilities for serving their population by comparing the number of renewable energy sites to the number of households, detailing how many renewable energy sources were available per 1,000 households in each region.

Region For every 1,000 households, there are X renewable energy sites
South West 53
East Midlands 45
East of England 42
Wales 42
North East 41
Yorkshire and The Humber 36
South East 31
West Midlands 30
North West 27
Scotland 26
London 8
Northern Ireland 1

Commenting on the research, Chris Harvey, Head of Marketing at Stelrad:

“Renewable energy is the way forward for our household energy and it’s fantastic to see such large numbers of renewable energy sites spread across the country. Investing in innovative engineering and resources is crucial for delivering sustainable energy and this shouldn’t just be left to certain regions of the country – it has to be a national effort.

At Stelrad, we’re committed to supporting sustainable energy development and heating design which embraces the future of energy production. This is the future for our energy production and central heating, and we support the Government’s aim of having all homes powered by renewable sources by 2030.”
