Newport CC won a hard fought game to at Ammanford CC by the margin of 20 runs.
Ammanford CC Captain Alun Evans won the toss and invited Newport CC to bat first on an excellent wicket in beautiful sunny conditions at Ammanford Park.
The visitors hit a total of 277- 5 at the end of their 40 overs leaving the home side chasing 278 in 40 overs to win.
Ammanford’s openers Alun Evans and Mathew Fisher set about reaching that total and made an opening partnership stand of 185 for the first wicket with Mathew Fisher hitting 112 which included some hefty blows for 6’s which had this correspondent reaching for a helmet! With overs running out Ammanford CC had to up the run rate but were frustrated by some accurate bowling from their opponents.
Michael Clayden starred for the visitors with bat and ball and put the brakes on the Ammanford chase.
The home side with five wickets left were agonisingly close to achieving the target but in the end ran out of overs and were 20 runs short.
Newport CC gained 17 match points and Ammanford CC gained 7 points. A highly entertaining game played in glorious conditions.
