A TOAST TO THE TURTLES THIS WORLD SEA TURTLE DAY

Try this turt-ley awesome rum

Today marks World Sea Turtle Day, and with six out of seven species of marine turtle threatened with extinction, now is the time to take action! One brand, Hawksbill Caribbean Spiced Rum, has taken matters into their own hands, paying tribute to their namesake, the Hawksbill turtle.

8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the oceans each year*, which understandably has a huge impact on the turtle population. Sea turtles have existed for millions of years and are integral parts in maintaining the ecosystems. From nesting on land to swimming in the ocean, they help cycle nutrients, which maintains a healthy habitat for other crucial marine species like lobsters, tuna and jellyfish populations. Hawksbill sea turtles also help maintain the coral reef by feasting on sponges.

Luckily, more people than ever are taking a heightened interest in the environment, choosing to turn to meat and fish reduced diets**, and shopping for sustainable products as a key focal point. A recent global survey*** found that consumers “have dramatically evolved”, and that 60% were reporting making more environmentally friendly, sustainable, or ethical purchases since the start of the pandemic. Further research**** found that 65% of global respondents stated, “that it is important that climate change is prioritised in the economic recovery after coronavirus”, which is why brands need to take action.

Hawksbill Caribbean Spiced Rum has partnered with the Barbados Sea Turtle Project, donating 10% of the profits from every single bottle sold to the project. The Hawksbill turtle is critically endangered – the population could be as low as 57,000 with fewer than 20,000 nesting females! You can read more about their conservation work here.

Along with donations, Hawksbill Rum also ensure their packaging is eco-friendly and the bottle made from sustainable and recyclable materials, with a cork made from waste material and a sugarcane fibre label printed with plant-based inks, this brand really is doing their bit.

If you want to help support their turtley awesome efforts, you can purchase Hawksbill Spiced Caribbean Rum for RRP £23 (70cl bottle) directly from their website as well as Amazon, Master of Malt, Drink Supermarket, Drinks & Co and Spirit of Harrogate.
