Mentrau Iaith and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru hosts Welsh summer drama club

The Mentrau Iaith (Welsh language initiatives) and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru are happy to announce the return of Clwb Theatr Cymru to offer kids another chance to learn about performance skills over the school holidays.

Clwb Theatr Cymru brings children from all over Wales together online to enjoy  sessions from dance to drama. The sessions – organised by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru – are suitable for children in years 2-6.

The club was first held in August 2020 to offer activities in Welsh for children  during the summer holidays while still in keeping with Covid-19 regulations. The club proved a success with 118 kids from all over Wales joining in.

One of the club leaders, actress Fion Wyn Bowen, says; 

“What I really enjoyed seeing in the sessions was the children really letting go. Obviously, as they were at home, they could move, investigate, open the imagination while still feeling safe. Sometimes what happens in a drama session is that you become conscious of the moment when kids notice people are looking at them, they become self-aware and sometimes insecure. We didn’t have that problem here.”

The Mentrau Iaith offer activities throughout the year to give children an opportunity  to use their Welsh language outside of school.

A parent of one of the participants last year says; 

“Through lockdown I was conscious that she wasn’t speaking as much Welsh as she  should, and I checked the Menter Iaith site and saw the drama classes. It was a lifeline  because both my husband and I were working from home we just didn’t have the time through the day to spend with the children. To know that she had at least one hour of speaking Welsh with other like-minded people and that kept her entertained and stopped us feeling so guilty.”
