Senedd Members have joined with campaigners to mark the second anniversary of the death of Christopher Kapessa and to show their support for the family’s campaign for justice.

On 1st July 2019 Christopher, aged 13, was killed after being pushed into the River Cynon in Mountain Ash. His death was initially labelled an accident by South Wales Police. The Crown Prosecution Service later decided not to bring a prosecution in the case – despite admitting that there was sufficient evidence to support a charge of manslaughter

The justice for Christopher Kapessa Campaign is calling for that decision to be overturned and recently won permission to apply for judicial review.

Senedd Members from Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru joined with campaigners on the steps of the Senedd in a show of solidarity with Christopher’s family and to support the call for the CPS decision to be reversed.

Campaign supporter and Wales TUC General Secretary Shavanah Taj said:

The second anniversary of Christopher’s death is obviously a hugely difficult moment for his family and loved ones. And it’s a shameful landmark for a justice system that has failed to deliver the justice that Christopher deserves.

The public interest is best served by bringing the case before a court and jury. As a Welsh trade union movement we will continue to support Christopher’s family and this campaign until justice is served.

It is positive to see such strong support for the campaign from our representatives in the Senedd. But they too have a role to play in delivering a strong and effective Race Equality Action Plan and helping to build an anti-racist Wales.
