WALES NAMED AS THE MOST POPULAR COUNTRY IN GREAT BRITAIN FOR WALKING ROUTES ACCORDING TO GOOGLE SEARCH TRENDS

Wales is the most popular country of Great Britain for walking routes and is home to four of the most searched for routes in Great Britain according to new Google search data.

The data comes from search and digital marketing agency, Click Consult, who analysed search volume around a number of walking related keywords to determine the nation’s walking habits and favourite routes.

According to their research interest in walking routes across Great Britain usually peaks around August and September and during some weeks last August search volume for ‘walks in Wales’ was nearly twice as high as it was for Scotland – and at one point triple that of England.

When comparing the search volume for the term ‘walks in [country]’ across the last 12 months, Click Consult found ‘walks in Wales’ accounted for 46% of the searches from Great Britain as a whole. Walks in Scotland brought in 39%, and England only 15%.

And when ranked by search volume, four of the most popular walking routes in Great Britain were here in Wales, including Devils Bridge in Aberystwyth, Black Mountain in Abergavenny and the Welsh Coastal Path which runs from Monmouthshire to Flintshire.

Snowdon was also named as one of the UK’s most popular routes and even proved the most popular search of the UK’s mountains overall – although in search data from Scotland that prize went to Ben Nevis.

The research also found that as a whole coastal walks are the most popular across the UK, with mountain walks coming in at a close second which may explain why searches for walks in Wales were so popular.

When looking at data for Wales alone however the reverse was true, with mountain walks accounting for 52% of the search volume, compared to just 40% for coastal walks. The remaining 8% was for the term ‘city walks’.

Unsurprisingly the most searched for term from Welsh users in relation to mountain walks was ‘mountain walks near me’.

And for anyone who is interested in discovering what walking routes are nearby to them, as part of their research Click Consult have created an interactive map that details everything from difficulty level and length to average completion time and highlights along the way.

The map can be viewed here and features 14 walking routes across Great Britain.
