MANTARAYBRYN releases his exceptional new EP: ‘Year of The Heron’.
His first release for some three years, this three track collection of songs marks an invigorating rebirth of sorts for the Cardiff-via-Cornwall artist. Cloud-busting tunes forged from life-changing experiences, he shares his pop coronation with the world today (16 July).
Alongside previous singles “Mayfly” and “Tantalus”, the EP also contains the sprightly opening track “Into One Ether”. With its leaping synthesisers lines, cooing vocals, and euphoric spirit, it’s a track that celebrates breaking society’s perceptions of conventionality to find your true self.
Speaking about “Into One Ether”, Mantaraybryn explains:
“If you have ever felt like you exist in different ways around different social groups, that’s what Into One Ether is about; constantly shifting between different versions of yourself to protect yourself and the perception of yourself. The track shifts into themes of religion and sex and the bizarre guilt that seems to surrond those two fields. At its core, it is a dance song about self persecution that I hope shakes off the confusing feeling of “which version of myself am I now?””
Shaped by several years of emotional upheaval, cosmic epiphany and a renewed realisation of purpose, the ‘Year Of The Heron’ EP arrives as a definitive statement from an artist coming-of-age and coming-out. With layers of emotional depth, complex narratives and nuanced references to nature, history, literature and love; the ‘Year of the Heron’ is described by the artist as his moment of “self appointed coronation”.
Reflecting on the EP on the day of its release and the personal themes that flow through it, Mantrarybryn says:
“After a pivotal and symbolic moment, the heron became a mascot for solitude in my mind, and this theme of being alone helped me to pull three extravagant, vulnerable songs into unison. Particularly after each track was mixed and mastered remotely during lockdown, the EP has an undercurrent of solitude; being alone after being with someone you obsess over (Tantalus), making sure you are dating someone or anyone just to not face silence (Mayfly), and also not knowing which version of yourself is authentic when you are alone (Into One Ether).”
Emerging in 2021 with a collection of songs more honest, empowered, and fully fledged than ever before, the ‘Year Of The Heron’ EP is the sound of an artist announcing his arrival with emphatic style. The EP is available to stream everywhere today, via the Modern Sky UK label.
