If you’re into alternative medicine, odds are you may have seen an energy healer. But how many of them have successful, full-time thriving businesses? How can healers turn their passion for helping others into a profitable and sustainable business model?
According to Amelia Vogler, grounding expert and energy medicine specialist, it’s quite possible and her business is a shining example. Vogler quit her full-time engineering job once the demand for her services made it impossible to do both. She says, “Energy healing has been said to be the future of medicine, and energy-based practitioners are increasingly in demand by individuals and cutting-edge integrative clinics. With so many different pathways that healers can take to start translating their skills into a profitable business, it is important to keep in mind several key decision-making factors and personal character traits that will impact the outcome of how successful you’ll be as a healer.”
Vogler goes on to say, “Because of the nature of working with body-mind-and Spirit, our business offerings are often diversified through a wide range of services and products, such as one-on-one healing consultations, group healing programs, to creating energy-based self-care education and Spiritual development training.”
“Energy-based practitioners hold the keys to combating stress, increasing vitality, and supporting overall health and wellness in the body, mind, and Spirit. This comprehensive and nuanced scope of practice requires the business owner to be discerning and skillful about communicating their services and offerings. These five tips can help you meet your clients where they are, stay in your integrity, and increase your income potential.”Here are Amelia’s top 5 tips for healers to create a thriving successful business:
TIP #1: Get clear on how you help people and brand yourself accordingly.
Because energy-based practitioners can work with almost any issue, from complex post-surgical healing to deeply personal Spiritual support, it is essential to select an area to focus on. Some people may think of this as a niche, but I tend to approach this focus not from a specific type of people that I help but on what I love and am most successful in helping people. Generally, we find our own medicine in life; what has been challenging for us typically guides us to our passions.
How might you begin to get clear about how you help people? First, look at your life, see what drew you to the healing, and see how this specific modality or specific focus has changed your life. More often than not, what has helped you is what is guiding you to help others. Once you find out “how you help people,” get the training you need to become a specialist or an expert in that area and brand yourself accordingly. This will help people who find you know exactly how you can help them, and those initial consultations will be well focused and aligned.
TIP #2: Think about your client experience.
Your work is more than a beautiful office, soft music, and your modality. Your practice starts the moment someone comes to your website, your Instagram page, or your Facebook page. Make sure that the love and care that you have for your clients is communicated through every single interaction that they receive when they come into the orbit of your practice. Ensure that every time they have any experience with you, your brand, or your work that they are entirely supported and nourished by that experience. If they can’t make an appointment without jumping through hoops, if paying for an appointment is a multi-step manual process, they aren’t going to make that appointment no matter how much they want to work with you.
TIP #3: Don’t talk about it; show them instead in a FREE Consultation.
Offering a FREE or low-cost consultation helps you connect with your future clients. These consultations help your prospective clients feel comfortable with you. It gives them a chance to ask questions, which is empowering, and it also supports you in evaluating if this potential client is a good fit for you. Most importantly, this session allows you to offer a short demonstration of what you “do” in your sessions with them rather than trying to tell them about the energy fields and the chakra system. Many people are coming to you with an issue, so in this consultation, use your intuition (or any specific assessment tools – such as muscle testing, pendulum, bio-tenser, etc.) to assess and give a short treatment. Allow them to feel more grounded after working through a short meditation; support them with a headache using a hands-on (over distance) technique, or reflect back on some of your observations to help them understand how you can help them. This way, you are truly meeting them where you are.
TIP #4: Invest in your work and build a great team.
Your work matters, and so does your team. I run a sizable global practice with teaching, consulting, and group programs. I could never run this practice without the proper infrastructure and a great team. I encourage you to invest at least half of your income into your infrastructure and your team. Don’t skimp on your tools; hire amazingly talented people and pay them well to make your work shine and support your clients through their excellent experience. I have close to 20 people who work WITH me (not for me). They help me create a fantastic user experience, provide professional assets, support creative collaborations, and keep my administrative tasks handled so that I can be entirely focused on my creativity and with my private clients. I suggest starting with a great virtual assistant who can work on your website and support client-facing communication and a fabulous graphic designer to help you make everything you produce beautiful and on-brand.
TIP #5: Learn to expand your modality to distance.
We have the unique ability to do our work from anywhere, so I highly recommend you begin to explore how you can work virtually or remotely. This will open up your client base from your local city to the entire world. As you figure out “how” to do your work remotely, also work with your virtual assistant to figure out how your global clients will book appointments with you and how you can offer that excellent client experience regardless of timezone or location!
