How Much Money Can Your Personal Data Make You?

Do you know how much your personal data is really worth? According to Invisibly, quite a lot.

There’s a saying about the digital world, “if you’re not paying for a product, then you are a product.” The implication is that many of the services we use every day—Facebook, Google, Twitter, Twitch, etc.—make their money by supplying personal data to advertisers.

So what is your data really worth? According to a recent report by Invisibly, this can range from a few cents or few dollars for something like an email address or shopping preferences, to over $1000 for data that has been stolen from users, like if someone were to get access to your stripe or coinbase account.

Let’s just focus on legal means of data acquisition though, which is big business for advertisers and data providers. Internet advertising was a $139 billion industry in 2020! Invisibly is on a mission to help you earn money from your data, so the profits aren’t all going to big tech and advertisers. You choose what data you want shared, then make money from licensing it to advertisers. Right now you can earn a few dollars a month, but Invisibly expects people will be able to earn up to $1,000 a year on their platform over the next 2 years.
