A crowd of 750 watched this JD Cymru South League encounter between near neighbours Llanelli Town and Ammanford AFC at Stebonheath.

It only took ten minutes for Ammanford’s Lee Trundle to roll back the years as he turned the Reds defence single handedly and with a slight shift of the ball drilled his shot into bottom corner of the Reds net to give the visitors an early lead.

Minutes later Ammanford’s Tristan Jenkins broke through the Reds defence but couldn’t capitalise on his chance. However in the 22nd minute of the game it was Trundle again who held the ball up front and waited for the advancing Tristan Jenkins and then slid the ball effortlessly into his path and Jenkins pace left the Reds defence trailing him as he slotted the ball home for Ammanford’s second goal of the game. Llanelli had their first half chances and the best of them fell to James Loveridge.

He was played in with a pass over the top of the Ammanford defence and it looked as if he would pull the Reds back into the game but he just couldn’t find the finish needed. Llanelli were given a lifeline when the referee awarded the Reds a penalty. Up stepped Zac Brown and he saw his spot kick hit the crossbar bar and rebound to safety.

Ammanford’s Liam Samuel always looked dangerous on the right and had a half chance saved as he tried to curl his shot passed the Reds goalkeeper. Ex Ammanford player Gavin Jones was trying his best to get the home side going but some robust defensive play from Ammanford’s captain Rhys Fisher and Euros Griffiths stopped the threats he was posing.

So it was Ammanford who took a two goals advantage into half time. The second half saw Llanelli try to force their way back into the game and they had a golden opportunity when Reed broke the defensive lines of Ammanford and with only the goalkeeper to beat he shot wide of the goal. Ammanford had the opportunity to pull further ahead when they were awarded a penalty of their own after Trundle was fouled in the penalty area. Liam Samuel stepped up to take the spot kick but missed the chance. The game was to and fro with both sides trying to counter attack.

Kai Whitmore in Ammanford’s midfield was driving his team forward whilst Kyle Copp was trying to do the same for the Reds. This game was finally sealed when Ammanford were awarded their second penalty when Trundle was tripped in the penalty area. This time Trundle picked the ball up himself and powered his spot kick into the roof of the Reds net making it three nil on the night.

With time running out the Reds were a beaten team and left to ponder their missed opportunities in the game whilst Ammanford will be well pleased with their start to the new season’s campaign.

Ammanford look forward to two home games next week – On Tuesday they entertain Briton Ferry Llansawel and then it’s Taffs Well who visit the Recreation Ground on the Friday
