Whitby Showground, North Yorkshire – open 25 to 31st August

This pop-up campsite perched on the headland of the popular north-east seaside town of Whitby is only open for August Bank Holiday weekend, to coincide with Whitby War Weekend – a living history festival spanning the ages from Vikings to World War II. Campers get free entry along with their pitch, next to the Showground and in the shadow of the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey. If the War Weekend isn’t enough to keep you busy, the town’s beach, boat trips, museums and railway are all a short walk away along with the famed 199 steps stairway that leads to the old town’s cobbled streets and quaint shops and historic pubs. Shared portaloos, elsan points and running water are all available on-site.

Purbeck Valley Farmhouse, Dorset – open 25 to 31st August

If you’re looking to stay in the south of England, try this pop-up farm site with fantastic views of Corfe Castle and the Purbeck Hills. Spacious pitches in meadows of wild clover, within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just ten minutes from Wareham or Swanage. Take a steam rail trip from Harman’s Cross station, a five minute stroll from the site, or enjoy one of the many great eateries in the local area. Beach days are also an easy jaunt from here with the Jurassic Coast close to hand: Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are both within half an hour. Tents, tourers and motorhomes are all accepted – the site has all of the essential facilities including toilets, showers, washing-up area and recycling bins plus chemical disposal.
