New research has revealed that burglaries in the UK are on the rise, with over £169 million worth of items stolen this year and 69% of UK adults worried about being burgled when returning to work. Home insurance expert at Confused.com Jessica Willock says:

“According to research by Confused.com, almost a third (29%) of Brits have been burgled, and with more than half (53%) of those reported while homeowners were out. So it’s no surprise that many of us are wary about leaving our homes to returning to work more regularly.

“But it isn’t just the return to work. Lockdown restrictions easing means we’re able to go away or spend days outside of our local area, which is why it’s important to look at how secure our homes are. Thieves target opportunity, but there are several steps homeowners can take to minimise the risk:

  1. It’s important that we remember to lock up even when we are in our homes.
  2. Remove the temptation and keep your high value items out of sight.
  3. If you are going out of town be careful who you tell, avoid mentioning on social media that your house will be empty and if possible ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye out.
  4. Invest in smart home security – shockingly 48% of homeowners don’t have any of the most common home security devices!
  5. Keep any hard to replace items, such as passports and sentimental items, stored securely.
