Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Review.

Since I heard that Marvel Studios would be making a Shang-Chi movie, honestly, I had no idea what to make of it. Please don’t get me wrong. I’m all for the MCU having its first Asian superhero. I didn’t have enough information before seeing this character in a major franchise. Plus, I hadn’t even heard of Shang-Chi before Kevin Feige announced this at Comic-Con – This is what I love about the MCU – (Marvel Cinematic Universe). There is no other production company that can take lesser-known characters and turn them into a huge phenomenon.
Well, that’s what I believe anyway.

Shang-Chi star Simu Liu is no doubt the perfect choice for this role. Director Destin Daniel Cretton in, my opinion, clearly has chosen an actor who certainly can keep this character in the MCU for many years to come. On the screen, you can see the character Shang-Chi, just oozing out of him. It’s almost like Liu was born to play this role. Even though he’s pretty funny in this film, you can see a sense of charm as well. Liu even brings a level of seriousness at times which, immediately grabs your attention. And the chemistry he has with actress/rapper Awkwafina is just first class.

Awkwafina is such a delight to watch on the screen which, has to be said. Playing the role of Katy, she no doubt brings out some comic relief. Katy as, a character, displays the characteristics of someone who’s a little aimless, a bit of a slacker. But she’s happy with who she is and also wants to live how she wants and have some fun along the way. I honestly found her quite relatable.

And I cannot wait to see what the MCU do with her in the future.

This entire movie has so much I did not expect to see. I mean it, is very much a straight-up Kung-Fu movie, but with the delightful Marvel Comics fantasy mixed in. I didn’t know that Shang-chi would have a sister in this. But the two of them blended very well together, I found.

I didn’t at first know what to make of how they changed the ten rings from actual rings to bracelets, but in this version, I felt it worked out well. The Ten Rings originally were worn on each finger by the Mandarin, and each had its own individual power. That was not the case in this flick but, I like what they did with them.

As for the other cast members, staring alongside Simu Liu as sister to Shang-Chi, we see Meng’er Zhang as Xialing. Five out of five stars for her – I must add. Playing his father, Xu Wenwu is Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, who I felt pretty sorry for half the time. – But he did show off some mad skills with those rings.

You may recall that I said this is pretty much a straight-up Kung-Fu movie. Now you can’t have a Kung-Fu movie without the legendary Michelle Yeoh. You might remember her from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I have never seen her in a film where her – skill and grace fails to mesmerize and captivate – she truly is a sight to behold.
The most surprising face to appear in this was none other than Sir Ben Kingsley. Back again as the wannabe actor Trevor Slattery with a laugh every minute. I could never tire watching this character. Especially when he first appeared in Iron-Man three!

Anyway, I can’t give Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings enough praise. I would say this currently ranks in the top five of my MCU list at this point. It’s fun. It’s action-packed.

It’s visually stunning! I had so much fun watching this, and I hope you would agree with me. There are many marvel characters I never had any appreciation for in the past. But thanks to the MCU, I love every single one they show on the screen.

Thanks for reading and, stay safe out there.
