Streamer’s Dream – Australia is the best country to be a streaming subscriber

Australia is the best place to subscribe to the world’s three biggest streaming services, new research has revealed.

The study by cybersecurity and privacy experts VPN Overview analysed the cost of monthly subscriptions to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ in 28 countries where all three are available. That price was combined with the size of each platform’s catalogue to reveal a cost per thousand titles, which was compared against the average monthly salary.

The results revealed that subscribers in Australia enjoy the best value for money, with each platform offering an impressive number of titles, combined with a low subscription cost compared to the national average salary.

Australia places first in the list with the average cost per thousand titles across the three platforms coming to just 0.06% of the monthly national average salary. Switzerland, whose national average monthly wage is the highest in the world, is a close second with the average cost per thousand titles equating to 0.07% of the monthly national average salary, followed by New Zealand with 0.08%.

The United Kingdom places in 10th position out of the 28 countries analysed, with the average cost per thousand titles on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ for British subscribers amounting to an average of 0.12% of their monthly net salary.

On the bottom of the list is Brazil in 26th out of 28 with an average cost per thousand titles of 0.62% and Mexico with 0.63%. Finally, Colombia is the country which the study identifies as the one where streaming services are the worst value based on the average cost per thousand titles coming to 0.73% of the monthly national average salary.

Prime Video offers the lowest prices with an average monthly subscription cost of £4.35 across all the countries in which the service is available, compared to £8.51 for Netflix and £6.11 for Disney+. Prime Video also offers the best ratio of cost to number of titles, as people around the world pay circa £1.32 per 1,000 titles.

A spokesperson from VPN Overview commented saying that “The number of subscriptions to streaming services reached 1.1 billion in 2020, and that number is only set to keep growing as major players continue to invest huge sums in content, and big names like NBC and HBO develop their offerings. At the moment Australia is the best place to be a streamer, with subscribers in the country enjoying a wide variety of titles at a relatively low cost.”
